Where does pest control stand in food certifications?

I have been given a chance to join an auditing training last week and I would like to share with you guys on where does pest control stand in the auditing system. How does the auditor audit and what are the things that the auditor will be looking at when he/she is in the food manufacturing plant.

I was trained on FSSC 22000. FSSC 22000 is actually a combination of ISO 22000 + PAS 220. According to my trainer, FSSC 22000 is quite a new certification in Malaysia and not many auditing companies are qualified to audit. For now, Malaysia is not accredited with FSSC 22000. There are not more than 5 countries are accredited with FSSC 22000 worldwide. However, due to SGS is a multinational company, we are eligible to carry out this audit and certify our customers.

ISO 22000 is a Food Safety Management System (FSMS) which it touches in providing safe food work environment and inclusive of HACCP requirements. Everyone knows when it comes to HACCP, it will focus more on the critical control point of the food products. This explains ISO 22000 actually focus on safe food work environment + safe food products.

Pest control falls under Prerequisite Programmes(PRP). Basically pest control is part of providing safe food work environment to the food manufacturing or any industry related with food under ISO 22000; and therefore it falls under Clause 7: Planning and realization of safe products. In Clause 7.2.3 (i): you will see the word pest control; which indicates auditor will audit on this part.

However, in ISO 22000; the write up for PRP is very brief and BSI (British Standards Institution) has decided to publish PAS 220:2008. Quoted below:-

"This Publicly Available Specification (PAS) sets out the requirements for the prerequisite programmes that are required by BS EN ISO 22000 and which assist in controlling food safety hazards; these include items such as the layout of premises and workspace, personnel hygiene and product recall procedures."

In FSSC 22000, auditors will combine PAS 220 with ISO 22000, during their audit. PAS 220 touch wider scopes of pest control and there comes our "Integrated Pest Management"(IPM). PAS 220 requirements are important to us (in pest control) as most of the time, auditors may refer to it when they audit any food certification; including HACCP. I will be sharing with you on PAS 220 related with pest control clauses in the next post.
