Frequency Of Fumigation

Pest Management

When I was having joint inspection with my customer the other day, I spotted Stegobium paniceum at their gluten powder. Stegobium paniceum is well known as drugstore beetle of biscuit beetle to most of the people.

Stegobium paniceum is small in size. The size of an adult can be up to 3.5mm. You will start seeing the infestation if your products have been kept for some time after the last fumigation. My customer told me, they just received the goods from their supplier in the afternoon and I taught her to question back her supplier, 'When was the gluten powder last fumigated?'

She threw me a question, 'How often do they need to fumigate the products?' Well, as a professional person in this industry, we shall explain to the customer, 'It's depends on what type of your targeted pest. Identify your pest. Understand their life cycle. How long does it take from egg to become an adult? From there, you will know when is the next cycle of reinfestation.' You will get your answer.

Secondly, it is depends on the customer's objective. Do you want to take precaution steps or treat whenever it is necessary? She told me it will be very costly if she is on the precaution steps.

Service provider can only consult customer what is the necessary step in controlling their pest. We can recommend what is the frequency of treatment to tackle their infestation. However, decision is always in the customer's hand.

Infestation is just like coughing. As a doctor we give prescription to take the cough mixture 3 times a day, but because of cost saving, the patient consume once a day. To have a better cost efficiency, some will only take the cough mixture whenever they hear the coughing sound.

Reflect back to the infestation. Most of the customers will only proceed with fumigation treatment whenever they see the severe infestation happens. No precaution steps on infestation is taken on their products.

Animal Feed

Pest Management
Photo above does not belong to Carron Lee. It is an extract from internet.

I came across with a customer who sought for an advice on treatment for store product insects of animal feed. Well, in term of treatment, there is nothing else other than fumigation treatment. The next question that he threw to me was, 'How long can it last?' To answer this question, he has to know what type of species (insects) that he is dealing with.

Image above does not belong to Carron Lee. It is an extract from internet.

This is because different type of species/insects will have different time length of its life cycle. Fumigation will only kill instantly of adult and larva stage. Though some claim it kills eggs and cocoon as well but there is no 100% remedy. There is still remain certain percentage of the untreated eggs and cocoons which generate the next generation of the insects.

How to have a better control? The stakeholder has to carry out fumigation treatment on its goods periodically. By saying that, the respective person must remember to segregate the treated goods from those which have not been fumigated. Failure in carrying out this exercise will increase the chances of store product insects cross infestation. In the end of the day, the stakeholder will be very soon to see the re-infestation activity again.

Secret Behind Doing Cockroach Trapping (Hotspot!)

Photo 1: Photo above does not belong to Carron Lee. It is an extract from internet.

Cockroach Trap is a must for a pest controller if he/she has the initiative to help his/her customers to solve their cockroach infestation. Trapping has to be part of the method in your cockroach programme. Trapping is not just for the sake of trapping the cockroaches. You should identify the caste of the cockroaches. Reason of this exercise will be able to tell you the hot spot location and you can have a better focus on your treatment.

Identify: -

a) Male and Female cockroach

Photo 2: Photo above does not belong to Carron Lee. It is an extract from internet.

The easiest way to train up your technicians in identifying the caste will be, by looking at the size of the lower part body. You can identify with your naked eyes. Male cockroach has a sharper and thinner shape towards the end while female cockroach is rounder.

2) Gravid cockroach

Photo 4: Photo above does not belong to Carron Lee. It is an extract from internet.
If you see any German cockroach (Blattella germanica) as shown in Photo 4, this is called gravid cockroach. The gravid cockroach will carry its egg (ootheca) with her till the moment its about to hatch. Once the egg being deposited, it will hatch within 24 hours. Don't be surprise you will be able to see 34 to 36 nymphs crawling out from the egg case.

3) Nymphs

Photo 5: Photo above does not belong to Carron Lee. It is an extract from internet.
To cut things short, for nymphs identification, I will put my focus on the first instar nymphs. It is very easy to be identified. The sizes of this category is very small.

Secret Of The Caste Identification

1) Don't do cockroach count without identifying the caste. It sounds meaningless and will be a waste of everyone's effort.

2) Don't do cockroach count by just putting the number. It does not really serve the purpose.

3) Put yourself in a helicopter view after the cockroach count, check out where are the locations which you can find the most female cockroach, gravid cockroach and first instar nymphs. You will be able to see the pattern of your cockroach infestation. Those identified areas will be your hot spot of treatment.

4) I will not really put my attention at areas with a lot of male cockroaches because male cockroaches are not my target and they run far; whereas female and gravid cockroaches do not run far. Therefore, it's pretty straight forward for you to know the hot spot if you do your cockroach count on the right method.

5) Do not expect to carry out this exercise for once. Give yourself a timeline by continuous doing it for a certain period and you will be able to judge if, it helps you in bringing down the level of infestation.

Tracking of Termites Nest

Published with Blogger-droid v2.0.4
Pest Management

Recently I have received an email from one of my readers, seeking advice on how to track termites nest.

1) First of all, you shall identify what type of species are you targeting.

2) Do termites identification.

Steps in doing termites identification: -

    a) Look for termites soldiers.

Base on the Photo 1, termites with mandible (darker colour) are the soldiers (Photo 2).

     b) Termites identification.

Under the microscope, check out where is the mandible of a termite and start identification.

Photo 4: Photo above does not belong to Carron Lee. It is an extract from internet.

Termites mandibles are vary in shapes and by identifying it, it tells you type of species.

3) Understand the biological of the identified species.

4) Termites nest can be found as shown below: -

    a) External: Termites mounds. Check out Photo 6 on where is the nest located.

Yellow patches are the termites nest. If you would like to lure or check out the presence of termites               nest within your neighbourhood, you can try the method as shown in Photo 8.

Bait tube comes later when you start seeing termites activity and you would like to treat the infestation.

      c) Internal: If you would like to check out how does the termites trails look like, please refer to the                     photos as below.

How To Treat Ants Infestation At Your House?

Published with Blogger-droid v2.0.4
Pest Management

Photo above does not belong to Carron Lee. It is an extract from internet.

Ants infestation? I went for a survey at a house which was infested with ants. The house owner showed me the ants trail at the floor (as shown above) and ants trail at the ceiling. He was asking, what else shall he do  because he has tried vary methods and infestation still occur!

Well, what we (Pest Controller) normally will do are: -

1) Check out the infested area. Most of the time, you will see their nest is in the cracks and crevices.
2) You have 2 choices here, which are: -

a) Clear the infestation by using ant bait. Disadvantage of using baiting system will be, you need to be patient. It takes time to clear the colony.

b) You may start spraying by using liquid insecticides. Disadvantage will be, you just treat what you see on the surface. You might not 100% clearing the infestation.

My preferable choice will be clearing the colony with ant bait. Once the colony is cleared, I will go for residual spraying (as prevention) in monthly basis. This will help in building a chemical barrier and deter from ants infestation. Last but not least, I will seal up all the cracks and crevices. This method is minimising the breeding ground and harbouraging area for ants.
